Last Word

Raghu Rai

The present state of creative photography in the country is very confused and leaves a lot to be desired.

Inevitably, India becomes the recipient of outdated technologies, fashions, and ideas from the West. This gets reflected in photography too. Photographers are expected to entertain through their work. But we are not visual entertainers.

Of course, there are enough of us who love to dabble in the medium and produce pretty pictures. Unfortunately, it is often this kind of photographer who gets picked up and lionised by editors and commentators, who make it a point to back the sensational rather than the solid.

If you say Shakespeare or Milton or Tagore is not entertaining enough, I would, quite rightly, dismiss you out of hand. The same principle applies to photographers. After all, ours is an art that is sensitive to nuance. We want to go beyond the mere physicality of our subject and delve in its inner truths. It is only in this way can the inner aura of people and objects be captured and communicated to others.

This requires a vision that goes beyond the superficial in both the people who photograph and the people who see.

Today is truly the age of fast food. We have fast food editors, fast food designers, fast food layout artists, fast food photographers. For them packaging is everything, the very essence of things.

Earlier those who influenced public opinion, whether they were editors or film makers or painters, tried to go about their work with a certain responsibility and a commitment to what they believed in.

Today, none of this is necessary. Everything works on market surveys. It is what sells that counts. Nothing else. And this,I believe, spells the death of true creativity.

wow!! cant help but love the guy and love you all the same...

This talk of the death of creativity makes me feel really sick to the stomach and awfully sad... with pessimism...
i am sure there is another perspective here that is still not visible. I believe that all things have a good part to it..and so shall this new age of speed and fast food.

wow. deep. i agree with the fact that creativity seems to be fading quickly. even more so with the coming up of new technologies. my poems are like that, well... some say they are. going beyond what you can see and going deep within someone.

hopefully true creativity will never die.

You know, creativity does die when it is aimed at selling the finished product. I've recently started to wonder if what I write is for an audience, or for me. I tried sending poetry, prose to various publishers, only to realize I was dying a little each time when they said, "Sorry, not interested." I recently sent a few pieces to a magazine who's aim is spiritualism, stories, poems of a personal nature. Guess what? My submission is strongly being considered for publication. This makes me smile, not because of the fame it will generate, but because I finally figured something out. I write and sing for the pure beauty and cathartic release of doing so, as you eye the beauty and spirit of our homeland, and capture one moment in time on film…

Poeticmermaid: Congratulations!! its always victory for artistry that comes from the heart, i am so happy. let us know when it is published. i have had similar experiences with my art and looks like it is getting to be recognised by the right set of people... i recently did an assignment for a reputed magazine and it will be published pretty soon.

To see the often seen scenes beyond what they seem to show,is that the inner sight that sees or a thought that provokes to view....i see with my thinking mind,i express what i feel ,i pursue for the sheer joy of pursuing things for their elemental simplicity....u dont need a band to recognise .im sure there are others like me who respects things for what they are.creativity isnt fading..see the mundane things with a newer light each day,its in ur mind and mine.LET IT OUT!!!!

Hey vivek m,

Found your blog today and spent some time reading through it. Good stuff, thanks! I'm thinking of doing one for my black magic love spells site, but not sure I have the time to do it right. Yours looks so good though, I might!

Take care!
